Freshfields Bolsters US Financial Services Regulatory Capabilities with Partner David Sewell

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer announced today that David Sewell, a leading financial institution and fintech regulatory lawyer, has joined the firm as a partner based in New York.

Sewell represents banks, non-bank financial institutions and fintech companies at all stages of the regulatory and enforcement lifecycle. His practice includes guiding clients on their most critical charter and licensing matters, business model and commercial objectives, transactions, examinations, regulatory investigations and enforcement actions, as well as the development and refinement of their compliance policies and procedures. Leveraging his substantial experience at the Federal Reserve and JPMorgan and in private practice, David is uniquely positioned to guide clients across the regulatory landscape applicable to financial services institutions, banks and fintech companies.

“US financial regulation continues to challenge clients amidst both ongoing market turmoil and dynamic innovation in the sector. Our practice is built around having the best talent in the regulatory, transactional and litigation/investigations areas – David contributes to each of these areas and in a way that is urgently needed by our clients. His deep and broad-based experience and market knowledge position him perfectly to provide our clients with the high-caliber service that characterizes the Freshfields platform,” said Sarah Solum, the firm’s US Managing Partner.

“David’s broad financial regulatory practice and his diversified experience working with banks, other traditional financial institutions and fintech companies of all sizes make him the perfect fit for Freshfields as we respond to clients’ needs for US financial regulatory expertise,” said Global Head of the Financial Services Regulatory Practice Michael Raffan. “We are excited for what David brings to the table for our clients, both in the US and around the globe.”

Sewell’s prior experience outside private practice includes positions with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where over a six-year period he handled a wide variety of regulatory, supervisory and enforcement matters, including for a number of regional banks, and JPMorgan Chase where he was the chief point of contact for key US banking and securities regulators.

He is recognized as a leading lawyer for Financial Services Regulation in Banking by Chambers USA, has served as a member of the Banking Law Committee of the New York State Bar Association since 2009 and is, among other attributes, a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist.

“I’m thrilled to join Freshfields’ already amazing team of US lawyers and to offer clients all of the benefits of the firm’s global platform. I look forward to helping Freshfields continue to expand its top-tier US-based offerings and build a market-leading financial services regulatory team here,” Sewell said. “From global investment banks to early stage fintech innovators, we at Freshfields stand ready to provide end-to-end representation in our clients’ most important matters – and to be true partners every step of the way.”
