About Emily Seo

Emily Seo is a Senior Associate in our Antitrust, Competition and Trade Group, based in Tokyo.

Emily represents clients on a full range of competition and antitrust issues, including multijurisdictional merger control, antitrust investigations, antitrust compliance and counselling. Her experience also includes advising on white collar defense and investigations. With professional experience spanning the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, United States, and Japan, Emily combines her broad international experiences with local expertise to provide tailored solutions for clients.

Emily has experience across numerous industry sectors, particularly in the the technology, consumer products and financial services sectors.

Prior to joining Freshfields, Emily was an associate at two global law firms in their London and Hong Kong offices. In addition to private practice, Emily has diverse professional experiences, having served as an academic fellow at the New York University School of Law, an extern at the Antitrust Bureau of the Office of the New York State Attorney General, and an in-house regulatory counsel at a listed technology company in the U.S.

Emily is fluent in English and Korean.

Recent work

Selected experience includes advising:

  • Uber on the multi-jurisdictional filing analysis and strategy in its sale of its Southeast Asia business to Grab and its subsequent appeal of the Consumer and Competition Commission of Singapore’s infringement decision before the Singapore Competition Appeal Board.*
  • Delivery Hero on the sale of Hungryhouse, a UK online food delivery platform, to Just Eat and the CMA’s Phase 2 review of the transaction.*
  • A Korean conglomerate on its antitrust compliance infrastructure and program in the aftermath of its DOJ resolution and designed a remediation plan, in line with global best practices.*
  • A multinational technology company on the KFTC’s investigation into the company’s potential bid-rigging and unfair business practices in Korea and subsequent labor disputes with responsible employees.*
  • A listed technology company in the U.S. in responding to the FTC and European competition regulators regarding its compliance with antitrust, consumer protection and digital platform regulations.
  • A global financial institution in responding to the European Commission’s LIBOR investigation.
  • A multinational personal care company on its comprehensive review of APAC distribution agreements for potential antitrust issues, including RPM, information exchange and hub-and-spoke conspiracy.*
  • A major U.S. private equity firm on its largest buy-out in India, testing and certifying the target’s effective implementation of a compliance remediation plan, designed to ensure adherence to the FCPA, UK Bribery Act and global best practices.*
