Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer recruits at roughly 25 different law schools and fairs. If we do not currently attend your specific law school interview program, or you are not granted an interview slot, we encourage you to apply by clicking on the 2025 Summer Associate Program Application link found in the Helpful Links section. We will review your application in a timely matter.

We currently have Summer Associate positions available in the New York, Washington, DC, Silicon Valley and London offices. So that you can have a meaningful experience, it is most helpful if you narrow your interest to only one office. Please note that if you are interested in joining the London office, we have positions available in the Corporate (Capital Markets) group.

You should expect to meet with 4 attorneys (a mix of partners, counsel and associates). You are also given the opportunity to meet with a junior associate over coffee or lunch.

Interviews will be scheduled in the morning or afternoon.

The recruitment committee meets frequently during the callback season and extends offers on a rolling basis.

We pay our U.S. and London summer associates $4,326/week.

Summer associates choose the types of work they want to perform during the summer program. We do not have a formal rotation system for summer associates.

In NY and SV, work is allocated to match assignments with the interests and availability of each summer associate. There is a continual dialogue between the summers and the recruiting committee members on available assignments and practice group preferences. We encourage summer associates to be open to different types of assignments so that they have a well-rounded experience.

In our Washington DC office, summer associates have a choice to join either the Litigation or Antitrust team for the duration of the summer program.

Every summer associate is assigned a partner and associate mentor based on his/her practice group preference, as well as a junior associate buddy. Practice area preferences are collected before the summer program begins. If you do not have a strong preference, that is perfectly fine too. We make mentor matches based on a number of different factors including practice area interest and extra-curricular interests. Each officemate and mentor is tasked with looking out for the well-being of each summer associate and making sure they are getting to know the firm, people and kinds of work that we do.

We believe that understanding how the global Freshfields team works together is important for our future lawyers, and so we have created a secondment program, which facilitates each interested summer associate to spend time in another Freshfields office. Assignments take into consideration certain language, space and workflow factors. Summer associates have enjoyed secondments in our Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Madrid, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo offices.

We have two formal appraisals for summer associates, one during mid-summer and another toward the end of summer. A partner from the recruiting committee will collect feedback from the attorneys who know the summer associate’s work and meet with the summer to go over feedback and talk about the summer associate’s experience.

We are open to splits with non-law firm organizations on a case-by-case basis but the firm requires each summer associate to spend a minimum of eight weeks of employment with us.

Absolutely! Freshfields is committed to providing the community with pro bono resources, as well as providing our lawyers and summer associates with the experience of working on meaningful and interesting pro bono matters.

We encourage all summers to meet as many of our attorneys as possible, to that end we offer a variety of fun social, cultural and sporting activities to help foster great relationships across all practice groups and levels of seniority.
